WTCC: Interview mit Augusto Farfus vor dem Rennen in MacauWTCC: BMW title challenger Farfus: “Macau has produced a lot of surprises.”

Augusto Farfus (BR) vom BMW Team Germany hat beim Saisonfinale der FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in Macau (CN) am 22. November 2009 die Chance, nach Roberto Ravaglia (IT, 1987) und Andy Priaulx (GB, 2005-2007) den fünften Fahrertitel in der Tourenwagen-WM für BMW zu erringen. Im Interview spricht der 26-Jährige über seine bisherige Saison und die beiden abschließenden Rennen auf dem „Guia Circuit“.
Augusto, mit welchen Gedanken reisen Sie zum WM-Finale nach Macau?
Augusto Farfus: „Zunächst einmal bin ich froh, dass ich vor dem Finale noch eine Chance auf den WM-Titel habe. In der Herstellerwertung geht es ja sogar noch enger zu. Gemeinsam werden BMW und ich nun alles geben, um in Macau beide Titel nach München zu holen. Wir sind realistisch genug um zu wissen, dass dies nicht gerade einfach werden wird. Ich persönlich habe allerdings nichts zu verlieren und werde alles geben.“
FĂĽnf Siege und drei Polepositions: Sind Sie mit Ihrer Leistung in der bisherigen Saison zufrieden?
Farfus: „Ja, insgesamt kann ich mit meiner Performance zufrieden sein. Der schwarze Fleck auf meiner Saisonbilanz ist allerdings Brünn. Dort habe ich einen Fehler gemacht und wertvolle Punkte verloren. Ich denke aber, dass ich nicht der einzige Fahrer bin, dem so etwas passiert ist. Bei mir war es jedoch für alle sichtbar, da ich von der Poleposition gestartet war. Abgesehen davon waren meine Ergebnisse okay.“
Wenn Brünn der Tiefpunkt des Jahres war, welches war der Höhepunkt?
Farfus: „In Pau hatte ich ein sehr gutes Wochenende und habe mit zwei zweiten Plätzen 16 Punkte gesammelt. Für jeden Fahrer zählt jedoch ein Sieg noch mehr. Deshalb habe ich wohl in Brands Hatch meine stärkste Leistung gezeigt. Im ersten Rennen wurde ich in der ersten Kurve getroffen und fiel weit zurück. Alles schien verloren. Dann bin ich jedoch noch auf Platz acht nach vorn gekommen und habe Lauf zwei gewonnen. Das war immens wichtig, und der Druck war groß.“
SEAT hat in der Fahrerwertung noch zwei Eisen im Feuer. Wie groĂź ist dieser Vorteil?
Farfus: „Natürlich sind Gabriele Tarquini und Yvan Muller in der deutlich besseren Ausgangsposition. Aber wenn ich mich recht erinnere, hat es in Macau schon viele Überraschungen gegeben. 13 Punkte sind ein großer Rückstand. Aber ich werde versuchen, zur Stelle zu sein, wenn die beiden Fahrer vor mir eine Schwäche zeigen oder sich ins Gehege kommen.“
Könnten die drei Chevrolet-Piloten das Zünglein an der Waage spielen?
Farfus: „Chevrolet war in der Vergangenheit in Macau immer sehr stark. Ich hoffe, dass dies auch in diesem Jahr so sein wird. Jeder, der unseren Konkurrenten Punkte abnehmen kann, ist mir willkommen.“
2006 sind Sie schon einmal als WM-Führender nach Macau gereist…
Farfus: „Als ich damals mit Alfa Romeo noch Chancen auf den Titel hatte, war die Ausganglage eine andere. Ich musste mit 70 Kilogramm Handicapgewicht antreten und war deshalb in Macau nicht so konkurrenzfähig, wie ich es hätte sein müssen. Diesmal liegen sowohl die SEATs als auch wir bei 40 Kilogramm. Ich bin überzeugt, dass wir es mit ihnen auf der Strecke aufnehmen und aus eigener Kraft um Siege kämpfen können. Natürlich brauchen wir auch eine Portion Glück, um am Ende ganz oben zu stehen. Mit der Situation vor drei Jahren hat das wenig zu tun. Diesmal kämpfe ich nicht mit stumpfen Waffen.“

In an interview, the 26-year-old speaks about his season so far and the final two races at the “Guia Circuit”.
Augusto, what are your thoughts as you travel to the WTCC finale in Macau?
Augusto Farfus: “Firstly, I am happy to go into the finale with a chance of winning the World Championship title. The situation in the Manufacturers’ Championship is even closer. BMW and I will do everything in our power to win both titles in Macau and bring them back to Munich. We are realistic enough to know that this will by no means be easy. Personally, however, I have nothing to lose and will give it my very best shot.”
Five victories and three pole positions: are you happy with your performance so far this season?
Farfus: “Yes, all in all I am happy with my performance. However, the one blot on my record this season is Brno. I made a mistake there and lost valuable points. I don’t think I am the only driver that has happened to this season though. Unfortunately in my case it was clear for everyone to see, as I had started from pole position. Apart from that, my results have been okay.”
If Brno was the low point this year, what was the highlight?
Farfus: “I had a very good weekend in Pau, where I finished runner-up twice and scored 16 points. However, victories always mean more to every driver. With that in mind, my strongest performance probably came at Brands Hatch. I was hit in the first corner of the first race and fell a long way back down the field. It seemed as though everything was lost. However, I improved to eighth place and then won the second race. That was immensely important, and there was a lot of pressure.”
SEAT still has two irons in the fire. How much of an advantage is this?
Farfus: “It goes without saying that Gabriele Tarquini and Yvan Muller are in a significantly better position. If I remember correctly, however, Macau has always produced a lot of surprises. Thirteen points is a large deficit, but I will be trying to ensure I am in the right position to take advantage if the two drivers ahead of me show any weaknesses or get in each other’s way.”
Could the three Chevrolet drivers tip the scales?
Farfus: “Chevrolet has always been very strong in Macau in the past. I hope that is also the case this year. I welcome anyone who can take points off our rivals.”
In 2006 you lead the World Championship travelling to Macau…
Farfus: “It was a different situation when I still had a chance of winning the title back then with Alfa Romeo. I had to race with 70 kilograms of handicap weight, which meant I was not as competitive in Macau as I needed to be. This time all title contenders will start with 40 kilograms. I am convinced we can mix it with SEAT on the track and use our own power to challenge for victories. Of course we will also need a bit of luck to come out on top. This has little in common with the situation three years ago. This time I am not going into battle with a blunt weapon.”
